E-prescribing
Prescriptions, written in the chart.
When a patient leaves the emergency department or the inpatient unit with a prescription, the prescriber writes it in Sammy, in the same chart as the visit. Sammy sends it electronically to the pharmacy the patient chooses, including prescriptions for controlled substances.
Prescriber’s choiceThe prescriber chooses the medication.Sammy never substitutes a drug, and no one pays to promote a medication in Sammy.
Patient’s choiceThe patient chooses the pharmacy.Any pharmacy the patient names: retail, independent or mail order. Sammy starts with the pharmacy the patient chose before and never picks one for them.
The workflow
From the chart to the pharmacy counter.
- 01The prescriber chooses the medicationThey search the hospital’s formulary by name and choose the drug, strength, directions, quantity and refills. Nothing is chosen or sent without them.
- 02Sammy checks it before signingDocumented allergies, controlled-substance schedules, refill and day-supply limits, the state prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP), the patient’s medication history and their prescription coverage. The prescriber sees every check and decides.
- 03The patient chooses the pharmacyThe prescriber asks where the patient wants to pick it up and finds that pharmacy by name, city, ZIP or NCPDP number. Sammy starts with the pharmacy the patient chose at an earlier visit, so the prescriber confirms it with them, and the patient can change it at any visit.
- 04The prescriber signs and sendsSigning sends the prescription electronically. The prescriber marks each controlled-substance prescription ready to sign on its own, then signs with two-factor authentication, following the DEA’s rules for electronic prescriptions for controlled substances (EPCS).
- 05The pharmacy receives it and repliesThe prescription arrives at the pharmacy’s own system. Refill and change requests from the pharmacy come back to the prescriber in Sammy, and every step is recorded in the chart.

- Medication history and coverageWhere the patient’s plan and pharmacies share it, Sammy shows what has been dispensed and what the plan covers.
- Nothing steers the prescriptionNo drug manufacturer, pharmacy or pharmacy benefit manager pays us to influence what is prescribed or where it is filled, and Sammy shows no drug advertising.
